TVShowsonDVD has the Josie & the Pussycats DVD press release. When I first mentioned this, I was looking forward to the Dan DeCarlo documentary.

However, some of the press release copy concerns me, because it’s a lie:

Josie and the Pussycats originally debuted on CBS’ Saturday morning lineup. The characters were first created by John Goldwater and Richard Goldwater for the Josie and the Pussycats comic book and were designed by Dan DeCarlo.

Dan DeCarlo created Josie (originally as a comic strip, before taking it to Archie) based on his wife. As he told it:

someone who comes in and says, “I want to do a girlie book,” and you come up with the book, you come up with all the characters and give them all the names, they still call themselves the creators. Because they feel that without them telling you to do this, you wouldn’t have had the characters that you have, you wouldn’t have the book that you have.

There’s nothing unusual about the owners of Archie Comics claiming the credit — they’ve done so in other cases — but it’s simply not true. So I have to wonder just how accurate the bonus features will be. Here’s the writeup:

Josie and the Pussycats: The Complete Series will include a bonus documentary focusing on Josie and the Pussycats designer, Dan DeCarlo. Titled: The Allure and Charm of Dan DeCarlo, the documentary tells the story of the comic book artist turned gag cartoonist and illustrator, who contributed to the creation of the legendary Archie comics as well as some of the most racy golden age pin up girl art to date. The ironies of this life and the beauty derived from tragedy are what defined Dan as a gentleman, artist, and father. The documentary explores the man’s life through the words of his biographer as well as colleagues from his professional life, including renowned comic book superhero creator Stan Lee.

Min faster i Canada sendte mig tegneserier, mest DC, men af og til også en del fra Archie, Der var bl. a. nogle af Josie and the Pussycats imellem. Archie's blade var ret populære dér omkring -68 / -72. Ved ikke rigtigt hvor'n det går dem nu, forlaget, men egentlig også hele Rivedale slænget!

Tak skal du have, Robin! Det er meget opmuntrende. Archie universet lever i bedste velgående i Dan DeCarlos ånd, men de nye tegnere på Archie kan slet, slet ikke måle sig med Dan DeCarlo. Archie har også udgivet nogle TP'er med udvalgte historier fra hvert årti siden 40'erne, så 40's TP'en vil givet vis indeholde Bob Montana og 60's og 70's TP'erne Dan DeCarlo.
